Communications Coordinator Trainee

The Centre for Indigenous Innovation and Technology (CIIT) invites applications for the position of Communications Coordinator Trainee as part of the Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment & Training, Targeted Wage Subsidy Program.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Communications Coordinator Trainee will be responsible for supporting key communication initiatives across the CIIT operations and programs portfolios.

CIIT seeks resourceful team members who are comfortable dealing with ambiguity, juggling multiple priorities, and taking a proactive approach to problem-solving in a fast-paced environment. You possess effective communication and collaboration skills and operate as a team player. You are a constant learner who applies curiosity and a growth mindset in your interactions with others and in your work.

The Centre for Indigenous Technology and Innovation (CIIT) is dedicated to empowering the next generation of Indigenous leaders in Canada’s technology and innovation sector. At our core, we believe that Indigenous peoples should have an active role in shaping the future of technology and innovation. Mission CIIT was created in response to the underrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in the technology and innovation sectors in Canada. Our Mission is to provide programming that provides excellence in technology training, increases Indigenous representation in the tech industry in Canada, and promotes problem solving using technology with an Indigenous lens.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborating with CIIT and board for strategy, development, implementation, and evaluation of organizational communications
  • Coordinating the current CIIT communications and maintaining records for the annual report and organizational newsletter.
  • Provide administrative support for CIIT’s standing programs and partnership inquiries.
  • Assist in the development of CIIT organizational communications strategy, editorial calendar, associated work plan and budget.
  • Lead in transcribing and organizing Board of Directors meeting notes, and Executive presentation materials.
  • Assist in developing funding proposals, program materials, sponsorship / pitch decks and other materials as required by the organization.
  • Assist in implementing key elements of CIIT’s communications and events activities; specifically our social media calendar, and communications activities both internal and external.
  • Track and measure the level of engagement within media networks over time
  • Identify significant media and/or public policy issues that can be used to support CIIT’s mission and vision.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.

Education, Skills, and Competencies:

  • High school degree or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year or more of job-related experience. Postsecondary degree or diploma preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including speaking, writing and active listening.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and to handle changing priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a collaborative working style.

RelevantworkexperienceonIndigenous-focusedprogrammingandprojectswillbe considered a strong asset.

  • Knowledge of the non-profit sector is an advantage.
  • Strong computer knowledge including the following programs/applications: Microsoft, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Ability to utilize media tools & applications including, but not limited to social media channels.
  • Professionalism, good judgment, discretion, tact and the ability to engage with leaders within the academic, non-profit, business, charitable, and government.
  • Strong organizational skills and demonstrated capacity to develop and implement practical strategies, work plans, and solutions to identified issues and problems and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Proven ability to assimilate information gathered through research and other sources.
  • Developed critical thinking skills, including the capacity to identify and appropriately assess and order competing interests and priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and in a distributed work environment.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Potential candidates must be First Nations, Inuit or Métis and reside within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
  • Must be registered or eligible to register with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training.
