About the Role
This role will support the programming and operations of the Toronto & York Region Métis Council (TYRMC), one of several volunteer-run Community Councils of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO). This role reports to the MNO Community Relations Manager but will directly respond to and take direction from the volunteer TYRMC Council President (or designate) to assist with council-related tasks. This position requires effective communication skills, both in person and through email and phone, and adheres to prescribed processes with limited independent decision-making authority. This position will also build and enhance community relationships and citizenship engagement.
Salary: $44,590 – $50,830 annually (Max based on a full-time schedule of 37.5 hours/week over 52 weeks at a rate of $26.0666/hour).
Note: This is an annualized salary figure. Actual compensation will be pro-rated based on the length of the contract (approximately 35 weeks).
What you will be doing
Communications & Marketing:
Monitor and manage the general council email and voicemail inboxes, ensuring prompt responses to inquiries
Regularly update the council's website with event listings, news, and recaps of events
Create and distribute a bi-weekly newsletter, including content sourcing and image creation
Oversee the council's social media accounts (Facebook and Instagram), responding to messages and comments
Create and share engaging content, including images and copy, for council-related news
Program & Event Management:
Assist in planning and executing both in-person and online programs and events
Source quotes for transportation, catering, facilitators, and other service providers
Secure necessary supplies and materials for events
Oversee event registration, including creating forms, promoting events, and checking in participants
Attend planning meetings and collaborate with the council team to develop programs
Run events as required, providing on-site support and coordination
Grant & Financial Management:
Keep an updated grant tracking spreadsheet to ensure timely applications and reports
Assist with writing grant applications, including project descriptions and budgets
Prepare and submit final reports for completed projects, in collaboration with project leads
Administrative Support:
Support administrative tasks such as organizing receipts, managing payment trackers, conducting inventory, and maintaining contact lists for citizens
Promotes the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)
Reports all unsafe conditions, hazards, or practices, accidents, and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, while adhering to all Health and Safety requirements outlined in the MNO's policies and procedures and provincial legislation
Carries out other job and branch-related responsibilities as needed
Schedule Requirements:
Must have the ability to adjust work hours with the ability to work extended hours or on weekends as necessary to accommodate volunteer council meetings, events, or special projects
Must be able to travel, usually within Toronto and York Region, for events and meetings outside of regular business hours as required
Qualifications
Required:
1 to 3 years of relevant experience in the development of programs and services in an Indigenous setting or a similar environment
Proven ability to manage budgets and project deliverables through project management software or other processes
Ability to manage personal and confidential information tactfully, maturely, and diplomatically
Potential candidates must be First Nations, Inuit or Métis and reside within the GTA
Preference may be given to qualified applicants who meet the requirements for MNO Citizenship and are in good standing
Must live in the Greater Toronto Area
Well-developed administrative and organizational skills
High degree of computer literacy (experience with Google Workspace environment, Zoom, Canva, Sender or other mailing list managers, and WordPress is an asset)
Professional verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work alone & independently with minimal supervision
Ability to work as a team player with council members and community volunteers
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment - detail-oriented and deadline-driven
Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
Relevant background in community activities, recreation and educational programs - Métis-focused preferred
Preferred:
Highschool (Grade 12) + 1 year Certificate program
Flexible work schedule with the ability to work extended hours or weekends as necessary
Ability to travel, typically within Toronto and York Region, for events and meetings
Assets:
Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader Indigenous policy and research, key challenges, and programs
