About the Friends of Allan Gardens (FOAG):

We are a volunteer-based organisation that is working to imagine and lead the revitalization of Allan Gardens. We aspire to grow the park and conservatory from their roots as a horticultural garden of education, natural beauty, and cultural influence to become a year-round green oasis and vibrant destination at the heart of downtown Toronto. FOAG aims to share the stewardship of this land with Indigenous organisations and support groups throughout the city.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Working with FOAG staff and the City of Toronto to advance the Indigenous Tree interpretation project and Medicine Garden Projects in Allan Gardens including coordinating with Elders, documenting the knowledge shared, and summarising the content into proposals (~15% of duties).
  • Supporting FOAG’s seasonal plant sales, farmers market, docent program, volunteer sessions including plant propagation, gardening sessions, and Sacred Fires (~25% of duties).
  • Opening and closing the Children’s Conservatory and or Palm House for FOAG events, and 3rd party events. Schedule will be coordinated with other staff and board members of the organisation (~20% of duties).
  • Setting-up and arranging the Children’s Conservatory and Palm House with tables and chairs to support the events of the day (~15% of duties).
  • Keeping the greenhouses clean, safe and orderly. Ensure floors are dry and swept before and after events, and that litter is picked up and placed in the proper place. (~15% of duties).
  • Water plants & provide plant care for the plants growing in the greenhouse and propagation house (10% of duties).

Qualifications, Skills & Tools:

  • Previous experience working with the public, with volunteers and with children is helpful.
  • Knowledge of Google Docs, Zoom, Microsoft Office are required.
  • Digital communication and marketing skills are an asset.
  • Candidates must supply their own laptop/PC.

  • This is a nine-month paid training position to give you the skills and experience to work in the landscape, horticulture, or greenhouse industry.
  • Since we will be working with children and other vulnerable populations, a police check is required. We will assist with this process.
  • There are both in-person and online components to this role.
  • The successful candidate may be asked to work during some evenings. Work week would be a four-day work week with a) Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, or b) Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday schedule. This would be to support weekend activations in Allan Gardens including the Farmers Market Plant Sales, and other cultural events. Schedule is negotiable and will be agreed upon in advance.
