Dishwasher (Part-time, Temporary) *New Position

 Location: This is an on-site position located at 340 Gerrard St. E.,Toronto, Ontario


Reports to: Community Chef


Compensation: $28 per hour, plus vacation pay of 4% paid on eligible earnings; 


Benefits: Eligibility to participate in the organization’s pension plan, subject to plan requirements


Base schedule: 10am - 3pm, Mondays and Wednesdays (10 hours per week) with flexibility to take on additional hours, occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays based on program and operational needs as mutually agreed upon


Length of Assignment: Six months (June - December) with a possibility for extension

About the position:


Right To Food is seeking a Dishwasher to support programming at the Sumac Community Food Centre. The Dishwasher plays a key role in ensuring Sumac’s meal programs run smoothly. Sumac CFC’s low-barrier drop-in meals anchor its work, offering a low-barrier way to strengthen social connection and improve food security. The successful candidate will be an integral part of Sumac’s kitchen team and will be part of making Sumac’s meal programs a success.This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys practical kitchen work, takes pride in keeping things clean and organized, and wants a consistent part-time role that contributes to community care.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Dishwashing & sanitizing: Wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment under direction of Sumac’s Community Chef.
  • Keep the dish area organized: Maintain a clean, tidy, and safe dishwashing area throughout the shift.
  • Light food preparation support: As needed, assist the kitchen team with simple prep tasks such as washing vegetables, peeling onions, portioning ingredients, or other basic food preparation duties. Follow all food safety guidelines and take direction from kitchen staff.
  • Follow food safety standards: Follow all public health and food safety guidelines and best practices, including proper preparation of sanitizing solutions and safe handling of equipment.
  • Manage waste: Sort compost, recycling, and garbage. Help keep waste areas clean.
  • Kitchen cleaning: Assist with general kitchen cleaning tasks such as wiping surfaces, cleaning sinks, and sweeping or mopping floors.
  • Support a welcoming community environment: Work collaboratively with staff and fellow volunteers to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming space for everyone. Contribute to a positive team atmosphere that supports a positive community meal experience.

Qualifications & Skills:
Required

  • Experience as a dishwasher in a high-volume environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, team environment.
  • Ability to be patient, positive and supportive in high pressure moments
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to be part of creating a welcoming, non-judgmental environment for individuals from all walks of life, ensuring that everyone feels seen and respected.

  • Diverse food industry experience is an asset (eg restaurants, institutional kitchens, catering).
  • Ability to work the base schedule with flexibility to take on additional hours, occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays based on program and operational needs as mutually agreed upon.


Physical Demands & Work Environment:
This role requires the ability to work in a busy community kitchen environment with frequent physical activity throughout the shift. The Dishwasher must be able to stand for extended periods, lift and carry items up to 25–50 lbs, and perform repetitive tasks such as washing, scrubbing, rinsing, sorting, and storing dishes, cookware, and kitchen equipment.


The work environment includes exposure to heat, steam, water, cleaning products, kitchen equipment, and varying noise levels within a community-based setting. Floors may become wet or slippery, requiring adherence to safe work and sanitation practices at all times. The successful candidate must be comfortable working collaboratively with kitchen staff, volunteers, and community members while maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming kitchen environment.
