Position Summary
The Early Childhood Educator Lead position is responsible for developing and facilitating age-appropriate program activities that stimulate children’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development, in cooperation with other program staff. This also involves liaising with parents, instructors, and other NYCH staff.
Responsibilities
- Maintains required records including registration forms; child profiles, immunization records, terms and conditions, and daily records.
- Updates staff records, policies, and health information
- Prepares accident and incident reports
- Prepares and submits written reports including monthly reports to IRCC, major accident reports to IRCC, student evaluations, and reference letters
- Communicates with parents about their children, and provides instructions to new participants
- Provides updates to the program manager
- Prepares program plans that reflect the values, customs and traditions of the participants using staff inputs
- Develops age-appropriate activities for children
- Takes lead role in running activities and supervising children
- Purchases supplies for the program
- Posts appropriate information and posters in the program area
- Conducts fire drill once a month and shelter-in-place as required
- Checks children daily, for injuries and illness as they arrive for the program
- Inspects and maintains toys, play areas and playground for safety hazards
- Provides day-to-day supervision and assistance to childcare workers
- Supervises volunteers/placement students
- Ensures that supply staff are always available
- Updates and adds new supply staff to existing lists
- Engages and supports parents and other community members with newcomer issues through referrals and information
- Attends cross-organization and team meetings, events and staff development sessions to share updates, best practices and other information
- Join NYCH committees as required/recommended
Education, Experience, and Skills
- Minimum level of education is a Community College Diploma in Early Childhood Education and must be registered with the College of ECE and in good standing
- Must possess First Aid & CPR certification
- Minimum of 2 years of experience working with children 6 months – 13 years old or the equivalent acceptable combination of education and experience working in the non-profit sector
- Minimum of 2 years of experience supervising staff and volunteers
- Strong understanding and awareness of settlement issues and concerns of newcomer children and parents.
- Verbal and written communication skills - ability to communicate clearly and appropriately with different groups; fluency in additional languages an asset
- Effective time management skills –manage own time and schedule by planning, prioritizing and organizing tasks effectively; juggle multiple responsibilities as well as the ability to deal appropriately with confidential data
- Ability to work independently and complete work without direct on-site supervision; handle daily problems
- Strong team player who stays in contact with supervisor and team members
- Proficiency in the use of computers, laptops, photocopiers, smart phones, projectors and printers as well as proficiency using software
- Ability to adapt to changing working conditions, program requirements and client needs
Other Requirements:
Documented proof of a valid police reference check is required for employment at NYCH, as well as an annual declaration.
Typically works regular hours Monday – Friday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm with occasional evening/weekend work
