Garden Educator Indigenous Program Leader Trainee

Green Thumbs Growing Kids is a community-based non-profit organization bringing gardening into elementary schools, for children to learn about the environment and food through hands-on activities. We partner with a cluster of schools in the downtown East neighbourhoods of Regent Park, Cabbagetown and St. James Town and a high school in Chinatown East/Riverdale. You’ll bring gardening knowledge and experience with children into our school garden programs, which are connected to the Ontario curriculum and beyond.

You’ll help teach children about the land in some of the following ways:

• Teaching children nouns in Anishinaabemowin or other Indigenous language, to name the trees and other plants in the garden, plant parts etc.
• Teaching children how to grow flowers, herbs and vegetables and care for trees
• Demonstrating how to respectfully interact with animals like worms and insects

Not only will you be teaching children, you will be learning every day and gaining new skills. If you have ever been interested in learning how to grow microgreens or how to maintain a compost bin, this is the job for you!

You will also get to work at our farmer’s market stall in Cabbagetown, selling produce that we grow on our green roof. You’ll ideally have some experience in one or more of the following: gardening, teaching, greenhouse maintenance, children’s and youth programming, customer service.You like children and can relate to a wide range of people.

You’ll work 35 hours/week, pay rate $20 +/hr. with increase likely after 3 months.
