Position Overview
The Groundskeeping Maintenance Trainee will work under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor to assist with the upkeep, cleanliness, and outdoor maintenance of the 86 housing units managed by Gabriel Dumont. This role provides hands-on training and mentorship in groundskeeping, landscaping, seasonal property maintenance, and safe equipment use, while supporting safe and welcoming homes for Indigenous families and community members.
This is a developmental opportunity intended to help the successful candidate gain the skills and experience needed to pursue a career in groundskeeping, landscaping, property maintenance, or facility operations.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with lawn care, grass cutting, trimming, edging, and general landscaping duties.
Support seasonal outdoor maintenance tasks including snow removal, salting, leaf collection, and debris cleanup.
Maintain cleanliness and appearance of outdoor common areas, walkways, parking areas, and green spaces.
Assist with planting, watering, weeding, pruning, and maintaining shrubs, trees, and flower beds.
Operate and maintain groundskeeping tools and equipment safely under supervision.
Conduct routine inspections of outdoor areas and report maintenance or safety concerns to the supervisor.
Learn and apply workplace health and safety procedures, including WHMIS and proper PPE use.
Maintain tools, materials, and storage areas in an organized and safe condition.
Participate in mentorship, skills training, and cultural learning activities as part of the trainee program.
Interact respectfully with tenants and community members, reflecting the organization's values of respect, accountability, and care.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
Willingness to learn and develop hands-on groundskeeping and property maintenance skills.
Reliable, responsible, and respectful in working with community members.
Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team environment.
Physically able to perform outdoor labour, lifting, bending, walking, and seasonal maintenance tasks.
Basic understanding of property cleanliness and safety practices.
Assets:
Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, lawn care, or outdoor maintenance.
Experience operating lawn maintenance or snow removal equipment is an asset.
Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and community housing priorities.
Enrollment in or completion of a landscaping, horticulture, trades, or maintenance program is an asset but not required.
Training and Development
The successful candidate will receive:
On-the-job training with experienced maintenance and groundskeeping staff.
Safety certifications (WHMIS, Working at Heights, First Aid, etc.).
Training in landscaping equipment operation and seasonal property maintenance.
Mentorship opportunities and support toward career advancement in groundskeeping, landscaping, property maintenance, or trades.
Compensation
Hourly wage: $22.00 (based on experience and training program funding)
