Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Thunder Bay, the Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor will provide comprehensive counselling services to youth, focusing on mental health diagnoses, substance use, and addiction challenges. This role involves conducting needs and risk assessments, crisis management, and trauma-informed care. The counsellor will also coordinate educational workshops and maintain strict confidentiality.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Provide one-on-one and group support to youth struggling with mental health and/or addictions
  • Develop individualized wellness plans in collaboration with youth, focusing on harm reduction, recovery, and holistic well-being
  • Support access to treatment, counselling, and traditional healing practices
  • Facilitate workshops and educational sessions on mental health awareness, substance use, and wellness strategies
  • Coordinate and facilitate educational workshops on mental health and addiction-related topics
  • Assist youth in navigating community resources, treatment programs, and healthcare services
  • Work closely with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, clinicians, and other service providers to ensure integrated, culturally appropriate care
  • Offer crisis intervention and stabilization support when needed
  • Prepare needs and risk assessments for clients
  • Accept and make referrals to outside agencies when needed
  • Maintain accurate, confidential case notes and documentation
  • Utilize the ENAGB management record system to document all client encounters in a timely manner
  • Maintain strict confidentiality guidelines regarding all youth, conversations, and referrals
  • Ensure confidentiality of privileged information
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of crisis management and the impact of trauma on mental health and addiction challenges
  • Ensure a team approach
  • Adhere to the policies and procedures of the ENAGB Youth Program
  • Perform other related duties as it relates to this position

Qualifications 

  • Strong understanding of mental health, addictions, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Knowledge of Indigenous history, culture, traditions, and the intergenerational impacts of colonization
  • Experience working with individuals and families affected by addictions and mental health issues
  • Strong communication, advocacy, and crisis intervention skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with community partners and multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrates a positive, fun-loving attitude, strong self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively within a team
  • Adequate energy and ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job
  • Able to work evenings and weekends, if needed
  • Diploma or degree in Social Work, Addictions, Mental Health, or related field (or equivalent combination of lived and professional experience)
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification
  • Valid driver’s license is a definite asset
  • Cleared Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSC) is mandatory.
