Summary of Position
The Senior Health & Safety Coordinator will lead and oversee health and safety compliance and performance across one or more major construction projects. This senior position provides strategic oversight, advanced inspection and investigation capabilities, mentorship to more junior safety staff, and ensures alignment with provincial legislation, internal corporate standards, and industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities:
Health & Safety Inspections
- Plan, conduct, and document comprehensive site inspections to identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-compliance.
- Verify implementation and effectiveness of safe work practices, hazard controls, and wellness measures.
- Issue corrective action requirements and follow up to ensure timely resolution.
Regulatory & Corporate Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable Canadian and provincial occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, and codes of practice.
- Interpret legislative requirements and provide guidance to project management and site supervision.
- Support regulatory inspections and liaise with enforcement authorities as required.
Incident Investigation & Reporting
- Lead investigations of incidents, near misses, injuries, and occupational illness or wellness-related concerns.
- Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective and preventive action plans.
- Ensure incident reporting and documentation meet legal and corporate requirements.
Health & Wellness Oversight
- Monitor and support implementation of worker health and wellness initiatives, including physical and psychological wellbeing.
- Identify trends related to injuries, absenteeism, fatigue, or wellness risks and recommend improvements.
- Promote early intervention and preventative approaches to worker health.
Training & Mentorship
- Provide coaching and mentorship to Health & Safety Coordinators and site personnel.
- Support delivery and evaluation of safety and wellness training programs.
- Ensure required training records and competencies are maintained.
Reporting & Continuous Improvement
- Prepare detailed inspection, audit, and performance reports for management.
- Track safety metrics and contribute to continuous improvement of HSW systems.
- Participate in internal audits, management reviews, and safety committees.
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
- Professional safety designation (e.g., CRSP, NCSO, CSP, NEBOSH or equivalent) preferred.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in occupational health and safety, preferably in heavy civil construction, infrastructure, or industrial environments.
- Demonstrated experience conducting inspections, investigations, and compliance reviews.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong knowledge of Canadian occupational health and safety legislation and enforcement practices.
- Excellent inspection, analytical, report-writing, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to influence safety culture and engage workers, supervisors, and management.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
