The Training & Apprenticeship Coordinator is responsible for recruiting apprentices and planning, coordinating, evaluating, and assessing apprenticeship applications and training programs in order to achieve its mission of providing training and employment services to the Indigenous peoples in the Greater Toronto area so that they in turn attain a better quality of life.  

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day planning and project implementation: monitor, evaluate and report on the progress of the program, clients and as required, i.e., monthly, and mid and end of program results to management, and funders 
  • Manage a high volume of participant requests and inquiries, providing timely, accurate and professional responses 
  • Oversee day-to-day program decisions
  • Oversee client progress and remediation strategies; discipline as required
  • Prepare and submit required program reports
  • Maintain data collection 
  • Coordinate recruitment, selection, and placement of apprenticeship
  • Conduct weekly client follow-up to monitor progress during employment placement
  • Track student data and follow up, i.e., submit weekly stipend to finance department
  • Creating, maintaining, and updating participant records, ensuring data accuracy and confidentiality
  • Maintain client records
  • Complete other operational related duties as they arise
  • Serve as the first point of contact between participants and the public, presenting a professional and welcoming demeanor in person, via phone, email, and virtual platforms
  • Act as a point of contact for professors, tutors, parole officers and professionals for clients within the trades department 
  • Work with participants to secure apprenticeship opportunities
  • Act as a liaison between students and academic staff and training providers daily
  • Assist clients in accessing high school transcripts
  • Assist with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills and Development in registering clients for Apprenticeship
  • Provide support and direction to each participant with regards to accessing financial resources that fit their needs when required (Band Funding, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability Support Program, Employment Insurance)
  • Work with students that have addictions and refer to the appropriate professional services 
  • Provide referrals to other support programs including housing, child-care etc.
  • Mentor, motivate and build trainee confidence and resilience

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years of related experience, including project coordination 
  • Knowledge of Ontario’s apprenticeship program and the construction industry
  • Experience in Trades
  • Experience working with Indigenous youth in urban settings
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment barriers faced by Indigenous youth
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship skills; able to establish trust and respect and engage, retain, and motivate multi-barriered clients/student’s meaningful connections with clients and employers
  • Strong coaching and facilitation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Zoom, and G-Suite, Webex, Teams and others
  • Ability to work independently
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and traditions
  • Experience in services to community members who may or may not have barriers to employment
  • Ability to work one-on-one with clients from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds
  • Demonstrated knowledge and familiarity of the Indigenous community and the services available in the Greater Toronto Area
  • First Nations, Métis or Inuit background
  • Understanding of the public sector and not-for-profit
  • Coaching skills
  • Supervisory skills
