WELDER
The Welder is responsible for performing welding and metal fabrication tasks to support the maintenance and repair of equipment, machinery and facilities. The Welder is required to perform structural, mechanical and lubrication maintenance, preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs and installation on various infrastructure, fleet and machinery.
This role ensures that all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards and company policies. The Welder will work as a collaborative member of the Works and Environmental Services Department, contributing to a supportive and innovative work environment.
Note: *This is a Union represented position belonging to CUPE Local 416*
ResponsibilitIeS:
General activities and functions include, but are not limited to:
- Welding and fabricating all steels, metals, and alloys to acceptable standards
- Welding repairs and winter maintenance repairs to all Works Yard equipment
- Structural welding and repair to ferry ramps, bridges, truck loading docks, and dock walls
- Structural welding and repairs to Marina docks and equipment
- Repairs to marine vessels in dry dock, to Transport Canada Ship Safety Standards
- Assisting in mechanical/hydraulic repairs to all Works equipment such as marine vessels, tugs, scows, boats, derrick, bulldozer, mobile cranes, shear-leg crane, motor vehicles, etc.
- Assisting in mechanical/hydraulic repairs to BBTCA ferries
- Measuring shafts, bushings, bearings, fittings; ascertaining wear and tear procedures
- Service repairs to BBTCA ferries, ferry ramps, cables, winches and equipment
- Keeps Sub-Foreperson – Works Maintenance informed of progress of assigned work
- Prepares equipment and material requirements and submits to Sub-Foreperson – Works Maintenance
- Assist in service and repairs to HVAC systems
- Must adhere to all PortsToronto policies and procedures
- Must comply with all Safety and Health policies, procedures, and legislated requirements and must wear designated safety equipment
- Other duties as assigned by PortsToronto
QUALIFICATIONS and ABILITIES
- 5 years welding experience in a machine shop
- Knowledge of marine repairs would be an asset
- Must have thorough knowledge of fusion welding procedures to Canadian Welding Bureau Standards
- Thorough knowledge of acetylene cutting, plasma cutting, gouging, and air arc gouging
- Knowledge of cutting and welding procedures for various steels, metals, and alloys
- Valid Class “G” Drivers Licence, Class "D" would be an asset
- Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR would be a definite asset
- Ability to carry out TIG welding procedures
- Must be able to work with and read precision measuring instruments
- Must be able to safely use small and medium power hand tools
- Must have strong and clear communication skills (verbal & written English)
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision
- Must have knowledge of legislated safety requirements
- Must be familiar with safe operating procedures
- Must be and able to climb and work at heights up to 200 feet
- Able to lift up to 25 Kgs (50 Lbs) floor to waist
- Able to swim and tread water for two (2) minutes is recommended
CONDITIONS:
- Criminal record check will be conducted on hire
- Annual Driver’s License validity check, as applicable.
- Flexibility to work extended hours or weekends, as the need arises
HOURS OF WORK: Scheduled for 7.5 hours per day, Monday to Friday, between 700 to 1800h, Shift work may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
COMPENSATION: $41.81/hour
LOCATION: Works Department - 23 Unwin Avenue, Toronto
