Position Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor of Native Youth Resource Center, the Drop-In Trainee will support the Youth Department in delivering drop-in services and programming for Indigenous youth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct service to Indigenous youth (16-29 years old) experiencing problems that prohibit them from reaching their full potential
  • Provide support to Indigenous youth on site and in community (when required)
  • Co-develop and co-facilitate program delivery of drop-in services – life skill and cultural workshops
  • Develop activities and overseeing the smooth running of the drop-in program
  • Seek out community resources related to the basic needs of homeless and at-risk Indigenous youth
  • Ensuring that a full range of options are available to youth who are ready to take tangible steps towards achieving their potential
  • Supporting youth with school curriculum and resources to enhance learning
  • Provide group activities (circles) to youth in need of individual support such as crisis intervention, dispute resolution, and other supportive intervention
  • Support and respond to crisis situations that are taking place during youth drop-in times
  • Provide healthy food options to youth/community during programming
  • Provide kitchen support and cooking as needed
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date written reports and daily data collection as per funding agreements – ICE TOOLS and Daily Docs
  • Complete and submit reports at the end of each shift to identify outreach findings and trends
  • Conducting outreach activities that include attending cultural community events, visiting schools and other social service agencies and social media presence
  • Outreach regularly to ensure services are provided to youth in need
  • Must be able to work Youth Drop-in Hours 11am-7pm and Saturdays 9am-5pm
  • Other related duties and responsibilities as required

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Potential candidates must be registered or eligible to register with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training
  • Must be First Nations, Inuit or Metis and reside within the Greater Toronto Area
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience working with the Indigenous community or personal lived experience would be an asset

Preferred Skills/Capabilities

  • Must pass a police record check (Vulnerable Sector)
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • High literacy in Aboriginal Cultures, Urban Aboriginal issues, and understand the unique dynamics that exist within the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures
  • Written and Oral Communication skills
  • Organizational skills, ability to multitask, initiative and respect for confidentiality provide you with unique characteristics that will bring success in this position
  • Facilitation experience would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated understanding, and commitment to, integrating the Native Child and Family Services of Toronto Mission and values into practice, service and relationships
  • Demonstrated understanding of workplace Health and Safety practices and understanding of an employee's responsibility under current legislation
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff, to maintain effective communication and working relationships, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, tact, sensitivity and build strong internal relationships
