Artist-Producer Intern

Funder: Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training

Contract: April 1, 2025 March 31, 2026

Wage: $22/hour (35 hours/week for 52.2 weeks)

About Your Role

Clay & Paper Theatre is currently accepting applications for an Artist-Producer Intern. They will assist and support the Co-Artistic Directors in the day-to-day operations of the company and the production space with an emphasis on hands-on design and realization in the building of puppets, props and other play, parade and pageant images. The intern will have a passion for material arts, theatre, and

community-engaged public arts. This person is also interested in supporting how art and theatre get made and how we can open up and bring those experiences to more communities. The ideal candidate will be team-oriented, enjoy a collaborative process, take initiative, find joy in the outdoors, and is interested in social justice matters, and arts access.

The Artist-Producer Intern will become familiar with C&P’s particular brand of community engaged, multi-disciplinary theatre and they will train and work onsite in Dufferin Grove Park where we have been the theatre-in-residence since 1994. Some meeting work may take place online as well.

About Your Responsibilities

  • You’ll work closely with the co-artistic directors to envision and plan the look and feel of plays, parades, pageants and other Clay & Paper Theatre events and projects through discussion, improvisation, script, staging & scenario analysis, sketches, experimentation, and model making.
  • Assist with facilitation and supervision of volunteers and/or workshop participants, developing an understanding for workshop planning and instruction.
  • Explore and learn building techniques for masks, giant puppetry, rod, hand, & shadow puppetry.
  • Assist with the design and construction of production elements, this includes maintenance and repair of puppets and other pieces.
  • Assist with management of all production and workshop projects, including coordinating scheduling and logistics of production deliverables and workshop needs, to make sure all project elements are completed on time.
  • Maintain daily and overall workshop organization and cleanliness.
  • You may also assist staff with some aspects of producing such as: creating marketing materials, planning communications, and updating and maintaining the Clay & Paper Theatre website, social media accounts, newsletter, and information systems.
  • Manage, maintain, and upkeep all office supplies and equipment.
  • Where necessary, assist with workshops, rehearsals, and Front-of-House.
  • Become familiar with health and safety protocols for use of materials and all studio equipment.

Other duties as required to support Clay & Paper Theatre in its activities and operations.

About You

  • You have experience or training in an artistic, production, or communications field.
  • Creatively driven and enjoy working directly with artists, creators, and community members.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Self-directed, able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to adjust work schedule to evenings and/or weekends as required.
  • Positive and helpful outlook, flexible and adaptable to changing working conditions and situations; ability to work in a creative - and sometimes hectic, work environment.
  • Experience with power tools is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of design software and website maintenance are assets.
  • A Driver’s Licence is a major asset.
