Position Overview
The Building Maintenance Trainee will work under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor to assist with day-to-day building operations, repairs, and upkeep of 86 housing units managed by Gabriel Dumont. This role provides hands-on training and mentorship in property maintenance, safety, and tenant relations, with a focus on supporting safe and well-maintained homes for Indigenous families and community members.
This is a developmental opportunity intended to help the successful candidate gain the skills and experience needed to pursue a career in housing maintenance or facility operations.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with general repairs and maintenance of residential units, including basic plumbing, painting, drywall repair, and flooring.
Support seasonal tasks such as snow removal, lawn care, and exterior property upkeep.
Conduct building inspections and report maintenance needs to the supervisor.
Learn and apply health and safety procedures, including WHMIS and PPE use.
Assist with preparing vacant units for new tenants.
Maintain tools, materials, and storage areas in an organized and safe condition.
Participate in mentorship, skills training, and cultural learning activities as part of the trainee program.
Interact respectfully with tenants and community members, reflecting the organization's values of respect, accountability, and care.
Qualifications and Skills
Essential:
Willingness to learn and develop hands-on maintenance and building repair skills.
Reliable, responsible, and respectful in working with community members.
Basic understanding of building safety and cleanliness.
Ability to follow instructions and work well in a team environment.
Must be physically able to perform maintenance and outdoor tasks.
Assets:
Previous experience or training in trades, carpentry, plumbing, or electrical.
Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.
Knowledge of Indigenous culture, values, and community housing priorities.
Enrollment in or completion of an apprenticeship or trades program is an asset but not required.
Training and Development
The successful candidate will receive:
On-the-job training with experienced maintenance staff.
Safety certifications (WHMIS, Working at Heights, First Aid, etc.).
Mentorship opportunities and support toward career advancement in property maintenance or trades.
Compensation
Hourly wage: $22.00 (based on experience and training program funding)
