About the Friends of Allan Gardens (FOAG)
We are a volunteer-based organisation that is working to imagine and lead the revitalization of Allan Gardens, including a greenhouse expansion. We aspire to grow the park and conservatory from their roots as a horticultural garden of education, natural beauty, and cultural influence to become a year-round green oasis and vibrant destination at the heart of downtown Toronto. Job Description
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
Community Access and Event Facilitation (20% of duties): Work with Indigenous organizations and community groups to decrease barriers to accessing public spaces for cultural and community events. Support event logistics in FOAG co-managed spaces, including the Children's Conservatory, Teaching Garden, and Palm House, ensuring gatherings run smoothly and respectfully.
Program and Event Support (20% of duties): Assist with the delivery of FOAG's public programs such as seasonal plant sales, farmers markets, docent tours, volunteer gardening sessions, workshops, and Sacred Fires, helping connect visitors to the gardens through learning and relationship-building.
Facility Operations and Event Setup (20% of duties): Open and close the Children's Conservatory and Palm House for FOAG and third-party events, including during evenings and weekends. Set up tables, chairs, and materials to prepare event spaces and ensure welcoming, accessible environments for all participants.
Volunteer Coordination (20% of duties): Assist in coordinating volunteers to help deliver public programs and garden care activities, fostering an inclusive, collaborative, and community-oriented environment.
Facility Care (10% of duties): Maintain clean, safe, and orderly greenhouse and garden spaces. Ensure pathways and floors are clear and dry before and after events, manage waste appropriately, and support seasonal garden upkeep.
Social Media, Program Administration and Communications (10% of duties): Support administrative and communications tasks including scheduling, grant writing, email coordination, materials preparation, attendance tracking, and social media updates that showcase community impact and seasonal activities.
Qualifications, Skills & Tools
Previous customer service experience, working with the public, with volunteers and with children is preferred.
Knowledge of Google Docs, Zoom, Microsoft Office are required.
Digital communication and marketing skills for social media are an asset.

This is a year-long paid training position to give you the skills and experience to work in the landscape, horticulture, greenhouse sectors, and in community programming. This contract has an end date of March 31st, 2027.
Since we will be working with children and other vulnerable populations, a police check is required. We will assist with this process.
A shared PC is provided for administrative tasks.
There are both in-person and online components to this role.
The successful candidate will be asked to work during weekends and evenings. The work week is flexible, and typically runs Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This would be to support weekend activations in Allan Gardens including the Farmers Market Plant Sales, and other cultural events. The schedule will be reviewed and will be agreed upon in advance.
