We are actively seeking candidates for the role of Indigenous Peer Support worker. This position requires a strong understanding of and respect for First Nations culture, language, and traditional healing practices.
- Preference will be given to individuals of First Nations ancestry (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment).
- Previous experience or training in traditional/cultural healing services.
- Knowledge of the people, culture, language, and health priorities of the First Nations communities .
- A certificate, diploma, or degree in a health-related field is an assets.
- Two years' experience in the health services field.
- Background in teaching would be an asset.
- Professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality are essential.
- Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License.
- Strong working knowledge and experience in time management, excellent organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide assistance and support to the clients and facilitate access to traditional healing and other culturally appropriate programming.
- Document services provided to clients and coordinate referrals to appropriate services.
- Provide information and/or guidance regarding Traditional values and spirituality.
- Maintain a standardized resource library or teaching materials.
- Reinforce concepts of holistic health from an Indigenous perspective.
- Consult with elders, traditional persons, healers, and medicine people concerning traditional medical practices and beliefs.
- Collaborate with Clinical Supervisors and Project Leads to plan and organize community awareness initiatives on traditional beliefs and health practices, as requested by communities.
- Promote cross-cultural understanding and awareness among health professionals regarding traditional medicine.
- Seek guidance from elders, herbalists, spiritual healers, and medicine people for the ongoing development of this initiative.
- Perform any other duties as directed by the direct supervisor.
