STAFF OFFICER - SECTOR 3
Note: While the successful applicant will be initially appointed as the Staff Officer for Sector 3, they may, in the future, be reassigned or temporarily seconded to another department within the Union Office – such as Communications, Grievance, Hiring Hall, Health & Safety, Job Classification or WSIB (see individual Job Documents for details – will be made available to potential candidates who reach the interview stage, upon request).
Description of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Sector Vice President, be responsible for the following:
Qualifications and Experience:
The successful applicant must possess a working knowledge of English vocabulary and grammar in order to prepare comprehensive briefs and reports. Must possess the ability to make verbal presentations to all types of meetings including training sessions, membership meetings, special committee meetings, external service providers and policy makers, and joint Union/Management meetings.
The successful applicant must have comprehensive knowledge of trade union organizations. Strong knowledge of the structure and operation of the Power Workers’ Union would be an asset. Previous experience in above listed duties would be an asset.
Formal education should be at the level of Grade 12 or equivalent. The applicant should indicate the various secondary and post-secondary institutions attended and provide transcripts.
The incumbent would be required to drive to meetings and other events in locations remote from the PWU office and, therefore, the incumbent must have and maintain a valid Ontario driver’s license. Applicant must provide a copy of his/her valid G driver’s license with his/her application.
The successful applicant must possess strong computer skills and demonstrate proficiency in the use of common business software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, electronic databases, email systems, virtual meeting platforms, and internet-based research tools. The ability to learn and effectively utilize specialized union, employer, regulatory, and case management software systems as required by the position is an essential requirement of the role.

Salary
$3,236.06 per week in accordance with the current Staff Union Collective Agreement—may include a probationary period of no longer than six months.
Vehicle
There is no automatic entitlement to a vehicle or vehicle allowance for any position listed in the Collective Agreement. Management reserves the right to evaluate the need for a vehicle; this position may be eligible for a vehicle pending evaluation. Mileage expense for the use of a personal vehicle for work purposes will be compensated as per the PWU Staff Collective Agreement.
Hours of Work
The position is thirty-five (35) hours per week. Hours of work shall be staggered, with start times no earlier than 7:00 a.m., and shall include a one-half (½) hour unpaid lunch period.
Subject to operational requirements, assigned duties, meetings, and other work-related obligations, the Employee may select their own hours of work, provided there is no conflict with assigned responsibilities or the efficient operation of the office.
Pension and Insurance
CUPE Plan—as per the PWU Staff Collective Agreement. Currently, employee pays 9.7% of base salary. The employer will make required contributions. Canada Pension Plan and Employment Insurance is in addition to the above.

Employer pays the cost of Green Shield Extended Health and Dental Benefits Plan. Competitive sick leave and vacation plans.
Other Working Conditions
This position requires extensive travel throughout the province, as well as regular attendance at the PWU office. The successful applicant must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, a reasonable commuting distance of the PWU office located in Toronto, Ontario. This position is not designated as remote or a work-from-home position.
The PWU will pay the cost of moving household effects, real estate fees up to $5,000.00, legal fees up to $2,000.00, if the successful applicant moves to the Toronto area.
