Position Summary

Under the Supervision of the Director of Thunder Bay,  The Youth Development Specialist 

will develop and implement a 10-month holistic program focused on increasing Indigenous youth financial literacy, addressing the impacts of historical trauma, and fostering community and cultural connections. The program integrates peer learning, media creation, art therapy, and storytelling to empower youth and redefine narratives around money, wealth, and healing.

The successful candidate will lead program strategy, delivery, and evaluation while ensuring all activities are culturally relevant, youth-driven, and trauma-informed. This role is ideal for someone with experience in youth engagement, financial education, Indigenous knowledge systems, and creative media or art-based programming.

Job Responsibilities

  • Create and manage an implementation strategy to meet the project's goals and objectives.
  • Conduct needs assessments through surveys and interviews with Indigenous youth and the Youth Council to inform content and delivery.
  • Design and implement a culturally relevant and trauma-informed financial literacy curriculum.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with community partners, elders, youth, and financial experts.
  • Develop tracking tools and requirements for participant progress and engagement.
  • Provide engaging financial literacy training in both group and individual settings.
  • Organize and lead regular workshops, lunch-and-learns, and training sessions, both on-site and in community.
  • Coordinate off-site, land-based learning excursions and cultural activities with participants, elders and knowledge holders.
  • Collaborate with counsellors to incorporate healing and wellness into financial learning.
  • Support youth-led storytelling and mixed media creation to redefine wealth and money through cultural and lived experience lenses.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive engagement strategy, including social media, events, and local partnerships, to effectively promote the program, host immersive youth events, and maintain a strong online presence.
  • Oversee monthly feedback mechanisms and utilize data for progress assessment and adaptation.
  • Maintain records of activities, attendance, feedback, and outcomes.
  • Create a detailed final report on program impact and challenges.
  • Develop a multi-year strategy for long-term program sustainability.
  • The candidate must be open to occasional travel within Ontario to partner communities.

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor in Social Work, Child & Youth Worker, or relevant experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working with youth (12-29 years).
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and community dynamics.
  • Experience designing and delivering youth programming, especially within Indigenous communities.
  • Knowledge of or training in financial literacy topics and confidence in facilitating such content.
  • Experience with trauma-informed care and youth wellness strategies.
  • Skilled in arts-based programming, media creation, and/or storytelling.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build trust with diverse stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with community outreach and engagement strategies.
  • Proficient with digital platforms for communication, media sharing, and promotion. 
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
  • Adequate energy and ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Cleared Criminal Reference Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSC) are mandatory.
  • Positive attitude, self-motivation, and the ability to work effectively within a team.

Salary: $30/hr

Hours: 30 hours/week, Tuesday to Friday
