The Conversation Canada invites applications for an Indigenous Affairs Editor-in-Residence.

Are you an experienced editor and journalist with a passion for reading and writing? We aim to bolster The Conversation's journalistic output that centres Indigenous scholarship and we are searching for the right editor to join our team to help with this goal.

This is a flexible residency. You will have access to our weekly editorial meetings and our database of scholars at Canadian universities and academic journalism in Canada.

The Conversation Canada's newsroom is friendly and collaborative and the team: dynamic, passionate and mission-driven. The Conversation Canada's stories serve as a database of experts for many "mainstream" journalists across the country. We belong to a global network of explanatory journalism sites in the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, France, Spain and other locations.

This Editor-in-Residence is designed for a journalist who wants to lead and expand journalistic coverage of Indigenous issues, research and perspectives.

**Role Title:** Indigenous Affairs Journalism Residence

**Time Commitment:** Part-time

**Term:** 12 month residency

**Stipend:** $2,520/month

**Location:** Remote (The Conversation Canada has editorial hubs in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver)

**The Opportunity:**

Our unique model pairs journalists with academic authors: you will act as a collaborative editor and mentor, helping faculty, graduate students and Knowledge Keepers translate complex scholarly research and lived experience into compelling, accessible and timely explanatory articles for a broad public audience.

This residency is ideal for an editor who is passionate about public education and journalism.

**Key Responsibilities:**

**Editorial Curation:**

Develop creative, timely story ideas on a regular basis that align with the news agenda and centre Indigenous research.

Commission, edit and copyedit articles written by scholars and researchers. The target number of articles is six to eight per month.

Navigate and respect journalistic protocols, including the Canadian Press style guide, demonstrate cultural and AI competencies to ensure the production of ethical journalism.

**Knowledge Mobilization:**

Deliver one to two virtual writing workshops or presentations to academic researchers and member institutions to demystify public writing.

Help bridge connections between TCC and Indigenous research networks across Canadian universities.

**Qualities we prefer:**

3-5 years of professional reporting, writing or editing experience, ideally within a digital newsroom or publishing environment.

A nuanced, systemic understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, politics, policy and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action?

An established network within Indigenous academic spaces and a demonstrated commitment to relational, respectful editing practices?

The ability to preserve an author’s authentic academic voice and expertise while shaping the text for maximum clarity, engagement and public reach.

Proficiency in French, or knowledge of an Indigenous language, is a strong asset.
