Our mission is to help them become responsible, participating citizens while leading their Indigenous communities.

Indigenous Youth Fellowship Program Details:

The Indigenous Youth Fellowship Program is a new City of Toronto initiative, in partnership with ENAGB, providing leadership and career development opportunities for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth (aged 18 to 29) to gain hands-on experience working with Toronto’s elected officials at City Hall. The program includes training, mentorship, and paid full-time placements in Council Members’ offices. The Fellowship provides equitable access for Indigenous communities by supporting young people with career navigation, job experience, and professional network development. It amplifies the experiences and needs of Indigenous communities in municipal decision-making spaces and ultimately, enhances representation in municipal government and politics. The Program would be co-developed and delivered in partnership with Indigenous community leaders and service providers to ensure the program honours a nation-to-nation approach that is well equipped to meet the needs of its participants.

The City of Toronto is committed to fostering an inclusive, accessible environment where all employees and members of the public feel valued, respected and supported. The City is dedicated to building a workforce that reflects the diversity of the public and the communities in which we live and serve. This aligns with the City of Toronto’s Reconciliation Action Plan, which outlines 28 actions to contribute to the visibility and overall wellbeing of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples in Tkaronto through placemaking and placekeeping, supporting economic development and prosperity, increasing civic engagement, honouring Indigenous ways of knowing and being, and recognizing rights to self -determination and self-governance. The development of an Indigenous Youth Fellowship is aligned with recommendation 20 to improve Indigenous economic development, specifically Action A:

  • Create Indigenous-focused workforce development, training, and employment opportunities to be leveraged through City programs and initiatives.
